Haryana
Haryana has a proud history, dating back to the Vedic age. The state was home to the legendary Bharata dynasty, which gave the name "Bharat" to India. Haryana attained statehood in 1966, when the Hindi-speaking regions of the state of Punjab were separated into another state. The state is located to the southeast of Punjab state, and shares its' capital, Chandigarh, with Punjab.
Most of the population is engaged in agriculture, growing grain, sugar, oilseeds, and cotton.
Cities - Chandigarh:
Haryana's capital city is the only Indian city to have been designed and planned by a single architect - Le Corbusier. The city, surrounded by the Shiwalik Hills that hem the great Himalayas, is a model of wide roads and spacious residential colonies. Visit Sukhna Lake, Pinjore Gardens, the Rose Garden and the Rock Garden, where the city's discarded junk has been recycled into bizarre human and animal sculptures. Chandigarh is a good base to travel northwards to the hill resorts of Shimla Kulu, Manali, Dharmashala and Dalhousie.Cities - Kurukshetra:
Kurukshetra is one of the most sacred places for Hindus, for it was here that the Mahabharata, the epic battle between the Kauravas and the Pandavas, was fought. It was during this battle that Lord Krishna preached his divine message, The Bhagavad Gita (the kernel of Hindu belief and doctrine) to a doubt-ridden Arjuna. The mythical holy river, Saraswati, is believed to have flowed by Kurukshetra, and many vedic hymns were supposed to have been composed along its banks.
